The BIAS Project has investigate the use of side-scan sonar in inspecting and finding rigs. The study was performed in Polish water where trawling is frequently occurring. One of the rigs where lost. It was localized by using side-scan sonar. The rig was later retrieved by divers using the location obtained from the side-scan sonar. The conclusion is that side-scan sonar is an effective mean to find lost rigs, especially when trawls have moved the rig a fair distance from the deployment position.
The sound installation will be opened 13th June and be opened until 23d August 2015. Åsa Stjerna has made use of BIAS-sound recorded at 38 locations. The installation will be performed in the tunnel at Furillen on the Gotland Island. Information can be found on:
BIAS standards for signal processing are released.
The BIAS Standards for Signal Processing will constitute the basis for a Baltic Sea regional monitoring of human-introduced underwater noise in accordance with MSFD descriptor 11. This standard specifies the signal processing procedures that were adopted by all partners of the BIAS project. The document is restricted to topics related to the analysis of the retrieved data. A general description is given to the adopted processing followed by a detailed specification on the algorithms or procedures. You can find more information in:
Senior scientists and MSc/PhD students within the BIAS project met at the Marine Biological Research Center (University of Southern Denmark) in Kerteminde, Denmark, 17-18th of March, 2015. Read more about the meeting and the minutes from the meeting.
The BIAS project has been selected to be presented at the LIFE Platform Meeting on the Management of Marine Habitats, arranged by the European Commission in Madrid, 26-27th of March 2015. The workshop is focussed around three themes:
- Regional integration of Natura 2000 issues
- Reconciling marine activities and the Natura 2000 objectives
- Conservation objectives: definition, assessment and use for adaptive management,
whereof BIAS will be presented together with the SAMBAH project (www.sambah.org) under theme 3. Among other reasons, BIAS has been selected as it represents one of the very few projects directly targeting data collection for estimation of Good Ecological Status under the MSFD and it is expected to provide highly valuable results relevant both for the MSFD and for implementation of Natura 2000 areas under the Habitats Directive. Further, it has also been selected as an example of international cooperation, overcoming potential problems such as dealing with data that may be sensitive from the national defence perspective.
We hereby present the BIAS Data-Sharing Platform and the Data Storage Device. These are two essential tools for working with acoustic data. The Data-Sharing Platform is used by specific users (here the beneficiaries of the BIAS project) to share data. The Data Storage Device is used for storing raw data. The first is accessible by the outside world while the latter is only for internal storage use and has no connection to Internet. BIAS will arrange a full day seminar in conjunction with HELCOM in Helsinki. Underwater noise will be discussed with a focus on implementing the Descriptor 11 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. BIAS will be responsible for the seminars and the aim of BIAS is to facilitate a regional implementation. For more information please read this invitation. To make results comparable and trustable standards that describe minimum requirements have to be used. At present there is no international standards available for ambient noise. BIAS had therefore to develop internal BIAS standards. These are dealing with standards of data handling, standards of handling of sensors, standards of rigs, standards of sensors and standards of signal processing. All of these standards except the last can be found in the report “BIAS standards for noise measurements”.
